Description
Myrmecophila albopurpurea is a medium-sized botanical orchid native to the Cayman Islands.
Synonym Schomburgkia albopurpurea
The genus Myrmecophila (which loves ants) is named because of the affinities between these orchids and ants. Their pseudobulbs are hollow and shelter ant colonies.
It grows as an epiphyte or on rocks, in full sun.
Flowering in spring, on a floral stem that can reach 1 meter, producing several flowers, creamy white with purple lip which will open successively.
