Growing Pseudobulb Orchids
Orchids such as Oncidium, Odontoglossum, Brassia, and all orchids resulting from crosses between these genera are sympodial orchids. They grow along a rhizome, on which pseudobulbs grow, which serve as storage organs for the orchid.
Growing temperatures
Most orchids of the Oncidium, Odontoglossum, Brassia, Zygopetalum, and their hybrids are temperate orchids. These orchids require temperature variations at some time of the year, between day and night, to initiate flowering.
You can grow your pseudobulb orchid indoors from October to May, then take it outside in the summer (away from the sun), from the end of May to the end of September, to benefit from the significant temperature variations between day and night at the end of the season. Orchids are brought inside when night temperatures reach 8°C or 10°C.
Exposure
You can place your Oncidium orchid less than 50 cm from a well-exposed window. Depending on the intensity of the light, you will need to put up a curtain in summer (if the window is south or west-facing). If the window you can place it near is less well-exposed, you can move the orchid closer to the window.
Watering
Pseudobulb orchids need regular watering, and they also need to dry out between waterings. Soak the plant for 15 minutes once a week, then let it drain well. Never let water stand at the base. Your orchid needs to dry out between waterings. Over time, you'll be able to see when the pot is almost dry and then water your plant again.
Use non-calcareous water (ideally rainwater).

Fertilizer
Add special orchid fertilizer every other watering, all year round. This will help your orchid grow strong and bloom beautifully when the time comes. To add the fertilizer, prepare the fertilizer mix in a bottle according to the dosage indicated on the bottle, then, after watering your orchid with clean water, water it again with the diluted fertilizer (one or two glasses per orchid pot).
Repotting
Epiphytic orchids are grown in a substrate made from pine bark . For growing pseudobulb orchids, a mixture of medium and fine bark is recommended, to which sphagnum moss can be added. This substrate should be renewed every 2 to 3 years. For our repotting advice, click here .
