Cattleya maxima est l'espèce type du genre, originaire de Colombie, Équateur, Pérou, Venezuela,où elle pousse près des cours d'eau dans les forêts, entre 200 et 1400 mètres d'altitude.
Floraison automne, produit des fleurs violet plus ou moins foncé suivant les variétés, labelle blanc et jaune.
Plante livrée non fleurie, sauf mention contraire.
